Come on you guys post something interesting.

Ok, let's talk about Don McClean's "Bye Bye, Miss American Pie" which I learned to play with a friend at our family camp vacation. It has been sung around the campfire there for years. I don't know, that might not be that interesting though.

Ok let's talk about the psychohistorical significance of his lyrics as it pertains to the killing off of rock n roll....or something like that.

What are the chord progressions Steve tell us about that. What kind of acoustic are you playing it on. What gauge strings? What's the neck relief on that guitar?

:D

Alright what I wanna know is what the heck is rye? The drink not the bread.
It's whiskey made from at least 51% rye. So basically they were drinking whiskey and . . . whiskey.

Rye whiskey like Crown Royal (my favorite), Canadian club, VO, Black Velvet, Canadian mist - your basic Canadian whiskeys. (I like rye whiskey if you can't tell ;) ).

Don't feel bad about not knowing what rye whiskey is. In England, they don't know either - at least not in the bars in London. Whenever I'd ask for Crown Royal, I'd just get a blank look. After explaining what rye is, still no recognition. I even asked them how it was that they knew nothing about one of the great whiskeys of the world, and from one of their Commonwealth countries to boot!

Strange, if you ask me....

Ahhh this explains your avatar as it is applicable to this situation Blooz. :D

Ok, attached is a PDF showing the lyrics and the chord progression we played. My friend Dave who has played this song for years adds all sorts of cool right and left hand flourishes I can't do yet that sound great on his old beat up Washburn he plays.

In answer to Tone's queries, I was playing my Joshua dreadnought with Martin light strings, which currently has fret buzzing issues and fret issues (High E string and B string) where the neck joins the body. I increased the relief during the trip to clean up some buzz, but it still needs some luthier work. Five of us played it at the big group dinner at this family camp and most everyone sang along. The guitars included the two mentioned above, a Gibson (maybe a hummingbird shape?), a green S101, and a new $199 Fender one of my friends had just picked up. All acoustic. I think everyone had fun! It is a non-denominational church related family camp so I was a little concerned that some might be offended by references in the lyrics. But it seems to be all symbolic, and even then, well intended.

The chord progression attached is my recollection only of what we played and is only for study purposes.

No worries. :-) It is not one I think of every day, just one I picked up with some friends on vacation. Situational folk guitar. Besides, a little controversy makes it more interesting for our poor, bored, Tone2theBone! LOL!

Thanks! I should note, the chords are strummed once each only until the notation "(tempo builds slowly)" which begins the first chorus, at which point more traditional strumming begins. The first part, the melody is mostly covered with the vocals.

Bah.. whiskey and rye... This is a GUITAR site and so lets look at some nice guitars instead!

well, I'm learning "in the flesh" by pink floyd, both versions, and I might be playing in a successful band soon.

I like guitars too... a lot!

Anyhow, back to "Bye Bye American Pie", have you guys heard Weird Al's parody of it? Here's the lyrics...he put quite a Star Wars twist on it:

"The Saga Begins"

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...

Oh my my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force, they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interview the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said "Now listen here"
"Just stick it in your pointy ear"
"I still will teach this boy"

He was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gunguns died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We were singin' ...

Yeah...it's all about the guitars.. I really like that neck.. the inlays are outstanding!!

Easy boys! We don't want to turn away any lassies from becoming members. Even though we can be male chauvinistic pigs (oink oink), we must contain our animalistic cravings for the opposite sex. OK, everybody think happy thoughts!
