my teach was asking me the same thing at my lesson tonight. he really wants me to get her, so we can become bosom buddies asap. to be perfectly honest, lately either work or family visiting has precluded weekend excursions anyplace to 'test drive'. i have done some research, and have a list now of candidates.

It's difficult to get "the one" because another will come along eventually. You look for something that will be "the one" for as long as possible. Then when you eventually find another one (and you know you will) you just hope you can the "the two" are my favorites.oke:

Aw, don't worry about it too much, kid. I (fortunately) learned it about 13 yrs. ago from my lovely wife. She patiently explained it to me...... and I've done my best to avoid it ever since. While I was brought up with the word, and it never meant much to me (in passing), it was used as a hurtful and hated word when she was a child........ and a child never forgets these things.
I can now say "I don't like that", or "It hurts me when you do that".
If a person is raised with hate, they will always have trouble overcoming it.
If they aren't, they'll always have trouble understanding.
I count myself as lucky to have the privilege of knowing such a lovely soul as my wife. She has endured...... I love her so much, and I'll say no more.

SVL is right......buy what fits you, and feels right.
But try a Tele. It's so versatile, it's usually overlooked. It's a plain 'ol workhorse of a guitar, very forgiving, low maintenance, simple design, and all around sweetheart. Oh, IMHO, of course.

CB, you'll know which one is right for you once you've gone for the test drive. It will feel at home. There'll be an unmistakable vibe. Comfortable like an old pair of shoes.

As for what you test out or what's on your list, I'm not in disagreement with the Tele fans here, because I'm certainly among them; Strum can vouch for this. Simple, versatile and probably the quintessential Country electric, no doubt.

But riding right alongside the Tele is the Strat, which 'ol Leo developed after that 1st masterpiece because the C&W pickers he listened to for input wanted a little more. So he gave them a guitar with even more sonic range, and a (misnamed) tremolo bar so they could do more stuff emulating a pedal steel guitar. For that single variable alone, I'd suggest if it was one guitar to go with, a Strat will open more doors as you progress.

And that's my 2 cents.

I hope to add a tele one day because of what it is, but I felt getting a strat was more versatile for a first axe. I do know, however, that when I went out to Guitar Center, which has tons of guitars, and some other shops, the one I wanted spoke to me right away, resolving any questions I had. That is why I say other than maybe focusing your search, ignore us idgits and trust your hands and ears.

Yeah, I forgot to point out the double cutaway makes upper fret access easier, but also, the contour on the body back is really more comfortable than a Tele's squared-off 'plank' body (sorry, Plank ...no other way to say it).

Very true. Which is just one more reason to feel justified with the G.A.S. thoughts of how perfectly reasonable it is to own both.:rotflmao:
The Strat body style is much more comfortable, especially if you tend to "hug" your guitar close (and who wouldn't? ).
I personally can't tell much difference in the upper access, my Tele and Strat both meet around the 17th fret on the upper bout, but I'm probably just used to it. The Strat definitely looks sexier, though.
The tremelo (sic) on a Strat does add a facet you won't find on a string-through Tele. I don't think it's been mentioned that pedal steel type string bends (done with the fingers) on a Strat results in the un-bent strings going flat in pitch. There are ways around this, of course, but the easiest solution I've found was to just buy a Tele and a Strat, and use whichever fits the mood the best.

As much as I love both guitars, to be honest, I only ended up with the Tele 'cause it was a bargain, no bids on fleabay and I got it. I play it as much or more than the Strat , tho.

Hey CB sorry to chime in late, but I recently bought a couple of the new Squier Deluxe Strats. One in Daphne Blue with maple board and one in White pearl Metalic. (See my pics). I would highly recommend these. They go for around 250 dollars US, and I would say without a doubt are the nicest guitars I have come across in years. I have 8 Strats and several Gibby style including 4 double cutaway guitars.
My strats range from Squiers to 50th Ann Deluxes, including MIM, CIJ, and MIA. The deluxes have great duncan Design pickups and 250 k Pots. The neck has the same feel and rolled edges as the MIA Deluxe. The colors are amazing and the tone is to die for.
They are made in Indonesia by the Cort factory. They have been making guitars for 30 years for various manufacturers including Fender and Gibson.
With something like this you would not be breaking the bank and you would be getting amazing value let alone a really nice looking playing and sounding guitar.
