[that just sounds so funny]

i think that if i'm going to actually be chomping my nerves and finally playing in a band, it's imperative that i have a new electric guitar that isn't bout-heavy.

i'm thinking that i absolutely must have a new electric guitar. :dude:

please tell me i'm right, as i am about to go to both dfw and austin and trying out lil honies and blow some decent bread... when i really should be conservative and put it away for other things...

there are other things? Oh, you must be referring to amps:rotflmao:

What sort of music are you going to be playing when you are working with the band? That should come into play a little when you are picking a guitar. Also, try the new ones and then look for a used one of the one or two that you like.

This thing they call GAS has a real grip on you. You and Shiner better start adding on to the house.

My wife thinks any event is a good excuse for a new outfit. So joining a band has gotta be a good enough reason to get a new guit. Go for it! Be sure to get Shiner one too.:)

strummy, my teach has already told me that all my playlist he wants me to learn on electric, as the slides, hammers, et al will sound better.

:D

I think that's an excellent idea Chad!:master: I'm still gassin' for that D'Aquisto. There was one on ebay last week with a minimum bid of . . . I think $2195? I passed on it and so did everyone else.

But . . . some day . . . she will be mine . . . oh yes.

Chad, i think that an excellent idea, as well... but first i have to learn about lectric's and What's Cool, so i don't buy a bummer for him.

strummy, LUCA, LUCA, i keep telling y'all. i'm not a bad guy. i'm a John Wayne, with bigger feet. :D :D :D

and adrian, thank you. :)

I'ma gonna post that on my bathroom mirror so it will be seen by other people in my house. :D

Learning on an electric is different to some degree, and it keeps the learning coming for me. I like to go back and forth between acoustic and electric. With so many good quality inexpensive options for decent electrics, no reason not to. For a strat type, you can start looking at the recent Squier threads. Some good bargains there. For LP types, seems an Agile might be the lowest cost best option. For a tele, looks like Squiers or Peaveys are the best starting point. You can always go up from there, but those are some good bang for the buck starting points based on my "research" here. Have fun!

CB, you want GAS justification from US ?! HERE ?!
Well, this is the place..

YOUR JUSTIFIED

Oh, and you may as well get a new outfit while your at it..:AOK:

to quote my sonbyproxy, i'm wubba. i'm not your normal chickie.

i HATE shopping, i HATE malls, and i only have... [going to closet to check] ok, i have less than ten pairs of shoes. that's counting my ocean sneakers to keep me from cutting my feet on coral. :D

and i hate spending money. unless it's on guitars. and then i feel guilty. temporarily. ;)

so i need you guys to pour on the 'go CB's' so i can do this guilt free. :)

CB...you say 'not bout-heavy', is that right? For your back's sake...so.....

Just tryin' to get a 'reference point' here as to what might work for you.

Do you consider Shiner's OE30 'bout-heavy'?

Your lightest weight electrics are going to be true hollow bodies (not semi-hollows like the OE30). 'Jazz Boxes' are the typical true hollow, but kinda 'fat'. You can get thinner, as thin as the OE30. My Epiphone Casino is an example of such. But does that body size and type suit you?

Speakin' of your sonbyproxy, is my memory accurate here, or didn't he have a Peavey Raptor or something that kinda got Shiner to go off the deep end and start this whole journey for you 2? I ask because: if you were to try that one on, is IT bout-heavy to you?

Oh...did I say : "Go for it, CB" ?

Yep.:dude:

Have you given yourself a ballpark budget?

CB quote :
i am about to go to both dfw and austin.as long as yer there may as well pluck on some electrics to get a better grasp of what is good and what's not.there are always thinline axes to consider although some may not have the bite you're looking for others might though.
SV's suggestions sound about right but do experiment and have fun too :D

Ok, go on and try a few of ones like I mentioned. If you are going a little country rock, you might start with the tele type. I am sure you will get into it. Then go with what feels right. They cost like what, maybe one billable hour at the range I was mentioning? A Vox AD30VT, maybe two billable hours at most. Still closer to one I bet. You can afford that much for your progress. You don't need a ton of pedals to get started, esp. with the Vox. I am sure Shiner doesn't mind.

I'm surprised Steve (svl) didn't catch this (he must have been tired last night). Get yourself a guitar, a new outfit and a pair of crocs.:rotflmao:

Did you really have to ask here for justification, CB? ;)

No, Shiner gets the outfit. That's how it works.

Given his taste in music, might I suggest a hat and shirt like the chap on the right.

The hat will also be useful in preventing sunburn while riding his tractor.

...no matter were he puts it ;).

CB, GO FOR IT! I might make a suggestion on your purchase. Since you do like acoustic and you want electric. Look at some of the model outs there that have both outputs on the guitar.
Good luck, SHINER YOU ARE ONE LUCKY GUY!

Well with the poor woman's sensibilities about money, I didn't want to push too hard right off!

Shiner has this outfit already. He just hasn't shown you guys any of the Pearl pics with him wearing it.:D

Oh man! Y'all have been busy.:rotflmao:

Wingsdad, you're right about the boy's Peavey Raptor. I'll see if he can bring it down for CB to play around with next time he comes.

Adrian, that is a sweet looking guit and you sure can't beat the price.

As for the rest of you dawgs, yes I'll admit, there are a few Captain and Tennille LP's in the old vinyl stack. But in all fairness I quit listening to them after they did their version of Muskrat Love. To this day I can't hear that song without losing my lunch.

[grin] y'all are funny...

[qualifies statement] i hate spending money on myself. i don't do it.

this is the first guitar i will have purchased for myself.

and wings, i don't know if i used the right descriptive term. she's heavy in the butt, and feels like she wants to creep off my right leg. i overcompensate her position while playing which throws off my accuracy sometimes.

i played the raptor once, when i was just starting to noodle, and before i'd finally picked a guitar up and said 'i'm going to learn how to do this if it kills me' so i don't truly remember how she felt.

if i'm going to make this leap, i want to be open-minded and test-drive several options.

i just needed help with the guilt. ;)

Cb's Gas

Hey CB,
Lots of good suggestions and depending on your price range, the Squire Vintage series (either Strat or Tele) might be a good pick at around $300. Good rep on those Vintage ones.
Try the Xaviere series too, they come in around $175 and I've seen good comments on those.
What kind of music are you playing??? What kind of sound do you want?? Type of pick-up CAN matter!!
Truly, you ought to get two guits, so you have different sounds and have the tonal spectrum covered!! :rotflmao:

CB, what's is your playlist?

The guitar you want depends on what you wish to play.

my initial audiences will be in outlying rural towns.

old country... right now, predominantly hank williams, wildwood flower et al, old country love songs... he hasn't told me everything i'm going to be playing, yet. i think i get to learn to... [is it 'double-picking'? with a really thin pick... spanish eyes?] at some point...

You probably need some sort of tele-style then.

What is your budget?

Well, then...since this will be your first electric of your own, you're gonna be playin' 'old country' and stuff that may be kinda related, some lead lines, but you've been a chord strummer, too, then IMO, I'd suggest that as you shop with an open mind, to test-drive at least a couple of Strats, be they, Squier, Fender Made-in-Mexico, or imiations by other manufacturers... the Strat's design is a perfect blend of form, function and versatility -- which is why it's been so widely and often imitated, the guitar of choice for so many different genres, from country (first) to surf to blues to jazz to rock to grunge...there really isn't any style it can't handle when hooked up to various amp and perhaps fx. It can sound almost like an acoustic guitar doing rhythm to a sassy, jangly electric (think of Lubbock's favorite son, Buddy Holly strumming 'Peggy Sue'...both of those sounds in one song), and then think of Stevie Ray squeezing his soul out of his Strat, whether tears or rage, then think of Jimi wailing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

The Raptor falls into the 'imitator' group, Shiner.

As for the guilt? :rotflmao: You're not Imelda Marcos with da shooz, girl, so think of spending $300 - $500 on your electric as akin to that 20 more pair of shoes you haven't bought...:D
