All reports are they are great bang-for-buck guitars. Kerc, who posted above, had one.

My Tex-Mex Tele Special is one of the intermediate MIM guitars, a step up in price from the Standard, and I like it fine. Though I've not owned a MIM Standard Tele, I have owned the MIM Standard Strat, and had no real complaints.

As with everything, you can get an even better deal if you pick up a used one.

Here are some pics of my 2 Teles.

Do you advise buying from ebay or craigslist? It just feels like gambling to me buying without seeing, testing and no warranty.

It's my understanding that Craigslist is set up more for local sales than long-distance ones, so if there's a city or town near you, you could probably find a MIM that you could actually try out.

Ebay of course is somewhat riskier. I have only bought 2 guitars on ebay over the years, and though the transactions weren't without some hitches I did not get burned (in one case a minor cosmetic anomaly was not noted, in another some of the pots on the guitar did not work, but the seller gave me a refund).

If you buy from someone with a lot of transactions and who has good feedback the risk is relatively minimal for brand-name guitars, especially for Tele-types where the risk of an undisclosed neck or headstock problem (as is possible with setnecks) is minimal to non-existant. Almost everything else on a guitar can be fixed fairly easily.

I would not buy a $1000 Les Paul on ebay, but I have bought guitars in the $100-$250 range.

Btw, speaking of brand-name Tele type guitars, the Peavey Reactor, which was made in the USA at the Peavey plant in Meridian Mississippi, has a good reputation and may be available for less than a MIM Fender. I have the sister Strat-clone model called a Predator, and it compares favorably to the MIM Strat I used to have, and was cheaper.

Yeah just a bit, although I managed to get mine for 1,500 euro, the shop treated me like royalty!

I bet-- isn't that over $2000 US?

Not a lot to some guitar shoppers, I know. But over one-third the cost of my whole batch!

Congrats again!

My "tele"

I suffered from major Tele G.A.S for a year until my wife got me this for my birthday.

It's a Stinger STX. They were made in Korea to spec by Martin from 1985-89. The neck is UNBELIEVABLE. Thick, fast and comfy. The pickups are quite shrill, and I plan to replace the electronics this winter. I'll keep the Stratocaster bridge.

I play this and a Strat ('83 '62 RI MIJ) thru the following signal chain:

Gtr > Ross Clone compressor > mid-70's Jen Cry Baby wah > 19 Sixty 3 clean boost > Xotic AC/RC Booster (AC modified for both voices) > custom Tube Screamer clone > Xotic BB Preamp > Ibanez DL-10 delay (from ~'85) > '66 Fender Bassman > 2x12 Reverend All-Tones in a JD Newell cabinet.

So I just got a Tele. Nothing fancy, just an SX STL Ash from Rondomusic. It does have some interesting features though. Like a Strat, it has a body contour on the back and one on the front for your right arm. The neck has a nice cream binding with the markers offset to one side, though I would prefer it to have the normal Tele shape headstock. The wood and chrome look nice, the neck feels nice if not a bit thick. When took it out of the box, I tuned it up, strummed a chord, and....YUCK. The intonation was so far off that the sound made me seasick. The guitar was very mal-adjusted, and I was disappointed at that moment. However, I spent quite a while adjusting the intonation with a tuner, as well as adjusting the action and the truss rod. Strangely, the low E saddle is at almost full adjustment (see photo) and yet it is still a bit sharp when played at the 12th fret. The others I was able to get right on. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? The neck pickup is a little muddy, and the volume pot a bit scratchy, so I will be replacing those down the road. The neck is a little thicker than what I am used to, but I am starting to like that. Despite the issues, I am loving this guitar. It sounds good, feels good, and I think was well worth the $119.

Did you leave out mentioning an upgrade to a 5-way switch, or are you using the original 3-way? And why topload the high strings?

I kept the 3-way switch, Krashpad - I like the middle setting on a regular Tele and was only really wanting the middle pickup to add to/soften the attack of the bridge pickup - I didn't want to add a blend pot, thus the mini-toggle with the resistor - I played with a pot to determine how much resistance I wanted between the middle and bridge (basically, how much of the middle pickup I wanted to hear) and then used the fixed value. It's more limited that way, but my use of it is relatively limited anyway. I was pretty happy with just the two pickups, and only recently added the middle pickup - prior to having the middle Lil Puncher in there, I did the resistor trick with the mini-toggle but adding the middle p'up to the bridge (via the resistor) and vice versa - with this setup, using the bridge pickup with the slight amount of neck p'up gave me a slightly softer/warmner tone out of the bridge unit and using the neck pickup with the slight amount of bridge pickup added lended a brightness that was akin to a Strat neck pickup - pretty nice and useful setup if you're not against adding switches to your gtr. Thanks for the comments.

Oh yeah - Top loading the top three strings gives them more flexability as they are effectively shorter in length, they'll stretch and give easier. With the low 3 going thru the body, they're longer and more taut giving them the maximum 'snap' and the high 3 being shorter makes them warmer sounding - giving me a more equally balanced Telecaster tonally.

My reason for doing this is more about tone than it is about the flexability of the strings.
